Sony proved once more that it is not solely focused on developing gaming consoles, even thought the PlayStation 5 and it’s upcoming release may be the only thing that pops into our mind when we hear ‘Sony.’

The manufacturer has also been making strides in the camera market, including their most recent bodycam project. Because bodycams are available in all shapes and sizes, the areas of application are wide and varied.

A good action cam is portable, comfortable and offers high-image quality with effective image stabilisation. We may be seeing new bodycam harness from Sony in the near future; one that ticks all the boxes.

Sony’s Bodycam: Here’s what we know

Sony action camera with chest harness

Sony Corporation filed a patent with the Japan Patent Office (JPO back in December 2019. The design for a ‘vest with portable camera’ was proved recently.

Based on the sketches included in the patent when it was released publically, Let’s Go Digital was able to create these high-render images to give us an idea of what to expect.

The harness is worn on the chest and stays close to the body thanks to the rubber-like material, even during fast-paced activities. In addition, the mesh material provides extra breathability.

Sony bodycam applications

Sony’s bodycam would be the ideal exercise accessory, especially if you don’t wasnt your wearable tech to get in the way. It will provide freedom of movement, making it perfect for skydiving, skiing or motocross.

A small, but high-quality camera is integrated at the front of the harness. It is an extremely compact but also easy to remove and change lenses.

Sony already has some experience with action cameras and body harnesses. In 2015, the Sony AKA-CMH1 Chest Mount Harness was released.

However the improved harness mentioned in the newly released patent – which can be viewed here – is much simpler and user-friendly, regardless of whether your a professional athlete or just starting out.

The patent doesn’t provide additional information about its functions and features, however, rumour has it Sony, as a leading camera sensor manufacturer, will opt for a solid image sensor

In addition, the patent also mentions in integrated battery for the harness. Combined with the solid image sensor, it means that users will be able to record 4k videos without hassle.

Sony bodycam release date and cost

No cost information or release dates have been confirmed just yet. However, Sony may be developing the bodycam for the 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokoyo from 24 July to 8 August 2020.

Sony is also the official broadcaster of the Olympic Games 2020; it would only make sense to launch the new tech before the Olympic Games kick off.
