The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the first-ever foldable phone with a glass display. Combined with a unique UX, it offers a whole new mobile experience.

Samsung unveiled the Z Flip at the Galaxy Unpacked event, which was live-streamed on 11 February straight from San Francisco. Here’s what you need to know.

What sets the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip apart

I had the opportunity to play with the Z Flip. Truthfully, Going in, I was more excited about the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but ended up spending most of my time with Z Flip. It truly is a remarkable phone.

Sleek, stylish design

The Z Flip was also designed for those “who see cutting-edge technology as a way to express themselves”. The device was engineered with first-of-its-kind foldable glass.

In addition, the foldable device has an innovative Hideaway Hinge and custom-built UX. It “provides elegant new ways to capture, share and experience content – all hands-free”.

“Galaxy Z Flip literally bends the laws of physics, and features a 6.7-inch display that folds into a stylish and compact form factor that fits in the palm of your hand”.

A foldable device unlike any other

Samsung promises that the smartphone “opens up a new decade of foldable mobile innovation”, thanks to its stylish design and its flexible camera experience.

“At Samsung, we were encouraged by the excitement for the Galaxy Fold. Galaxy Z Flip is an important next step as we look to build the foldable category by bringing to consumers a new form factor; new display and most importantly, a new kind of mobile experience. With Galaxy Z Flip’s unique foldable design and user experience, we’re redefining what a mobile device can be; and what it enables consumers to do.”

Justin Hume, Director: Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa

In addition, it is designed for ultimate portability. It is small enough to fit in your pocket, yet opens wide enough to offer everything you could possibly want from a smartphone.

Game-changing camera

If like me, you’re the type of mobile user who takes photos more than anything else, you’d simply love the Z Flip’s design, which replaces the use of a tripod for the ultimate hands-free experience.

Yep, simply flip it up, set it down somewhere and start snapping those stunning photos. It literally stands on its own, which enables you to capture hands-free images on-the-go; anywhere, anytime.

The Z Flip also comes with the Night Hyperlapse feature to capture vivid low-light shots in night mode, without a flash. Furthermore, you can capture selfies with the rear camera without even unfolding the device.

The Z Flip’s Hideaway Hinge

After the release of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung went back to the drawing board and created a hinge that is a “work of engineering art”. And this really is no lie.

A DUAL cam mechanism backs the hinge; Samsung explains that it’s “small but sophisticatedly designed to ensure every flip and fold is smooth and stable”.

The hinge also enables the device to stay open at any angle. Furthermore, the nylon fibres crafted by micro-height-cutting technology was designed to repel dirt and dust.
