Sony’s PlayStation 5 outranked its two competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, as the most wanted next-gen console. Sorry, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One

According to a recent poll by IGN, Sony’s PlayStation 5 is unsurprisingly the most anticipated next-gen console according to consumers.

Sony seems to have shown their hand early by teasing the features and performance of their next console. But it will be interesting to see what their competitors have planned to try and capture the public’s imagination.

PlayStation sales ahead of the competition

Sales for the current generation of consoles are probably a good indication of why the PlayStation 5 is in pole position in terms of consumer excitement. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro have dominated the market.

The Xbox One has sold less than half the number of units of their Japanese rivals. Despite the Nintendo Switch doing well as a late entrant, their total sales number are nowhere near those of Sony’s PS4.

The Switch has led sales numbers. But that is more a measure of its a late entry into the console war; along with a slew of great exclusives. Sales are however no indication of customer excitement though.

PS5 – most anticipated hardware

The IGN’s poll numbers also shows the PS5 as the most anticipated console. About 52.8% of respondents chose the PS5 as the gaming hardware they’re most excited to get their hands on.

Nintendo, with 28.5% of votes, was second and Microsoft third with 14.2%. The PlayStation 4’s dominance is a contributing factor to Sony’s popularity.

Most users are clearly happy and looking forward to upgrading their experience. (That includes me.)

Backward Compatibility and graphics ahead of the game

Added to this, Sony have been making all the right moves, with their announcement that the PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible.

In addition, the rumblings from developers about the power of its graphics hardware; and the potential end of long load times with the introduction of SSD also has excitement growing.

E3 will be the best chance that Nintendo and Microsoft will have to regain some ground in the hype war with Sony.

But with so much excitement for Playstation exclusives like Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding and Persona 5 Royal, it’s beginning to seem like Sony are holding all the cards in the battle for next-gen dominance, for now.
