Shoppers will now be able to pay for groceries with cryptocurrency at Pick n Pay stores across South Africa.

Pick n Pay is the first major retailer in Africa to test cryptocurrency payments at tills. The group is expanding the trial from the Western Cape to branches across South Africa.
The cryptocurrency payments are facilitated through Lightning Network Payments and to pay with cryptocurrency shoppers must use a standard lighting wallet on their smartphones.
Muun or BlueWallet are the recommended lightning wallets but the process has been tested with a number of different wallets.
The payment method was first trialled in 10 Western Cape Pick n Pay stores but now it will be available at 39 stores including:
Shoppers must download the CryptoQR scanner app and link their lightning wallets.
‘Should anything go wrong and the point of sale does not confirm payment, you will need to wait 90 seconds for the point of sale to reset. If you sent a payment from your wallet, it will be returned to you within a few minutes,” said Crypto Convert.
