Thanks to Google Trend analysis, we can glean data on what South Africans have been asking Google. Fun fact: the search engine processes more than 40 000 search queries per second.

The news scene in South Africa was a little more subdued this past week. We probably can’t have KFC proposals and tornadoes all year long. Although, a third tornado was observed in KZN over the weekend.

South Africa’s top Google searches

Jose Mourinho – 100 000 Google searches

‘Jose Mourinho’ garnered over 100 000 search queries on Tuesday 19 November following his first press conference since he was appointed manager of Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

The news generated intense interest from fans across the globe, including South Africa.

Bafana Bafana – 100 000 Google searches

Bafana Bafana trended in search on Sunday with more than 100 000 searches as they defeated Sudan on Saturday 17 November to get their Afcon campaign back on track.

Newly appointed Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter generated more than 50 000 search queries on Monday 19 November after his appointment was announced by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) slammed his appointed as “a racist choice”, saying the party rejects “this anit-tranformation and racist appointment”. Meanwhile, the ANC praised De Ruyter:

“We welcome this appointment. The responsibility accepted by Andre de Ruyter is one that must be shared by all South Africans, who depend on electricity for their well-being. While events of the past have justified public criticism of Eskom, the task of renewal and rebuilding must begin with urgency.”

‘Luyolo Idols SA’ also trended on Sunday 18 November, as South Africans generated more than 50 000 search queries for Idols SA winner Luyolo Yiba.

Yiba was announced as the winner of the 15th season of the hit reality show over the weekend.

Old Mutual – 20 000 searches

‘Old Mutual’ trended in search with over 20 000 queries as the family members of Sifiso Mtshali delivered his body to the company’s offices in KwaDukuza in an effort to get Old Mutual to pay out on a funeral policy. 

A viral video of the incident soon started trending on social media; the footage showing the grieving family members standing next to the body at Old Mutual’s KZN offices.
