G Suite update: Users will soon be able to send emails as attachments

The latest update to Gmail will allow users to forward an email as an attachment just like we’ve been doing in Outlook for years.

As much as we love Gmail, the email client is lacking a lot of things that you are standing for the clients we commonly use in the office. Gmail seems happy to provide email as a service and client updates continue to be released at a trickle.

Google is finally giving users the ability to add multiple emails as attachments to their outgoing mails. Quite frankly I don’t understand why it’s taken until 2019 for us to get this as a feature.

It feels like Google has barreled ahead improving its document suite and Android and everything they possibly could except for Gmail.

Gmail is good, but…

In fact, if I were going to hyper-critical of Google, I’d say that Gmail is the ugly stepsister in their stable of thorough-bred apps and services.

The problem with Gmail is really that its good at what it does. Add to that the fact that there isn’t really any credible competition and you’re left with an email client that has been phoning it in for a while now.

There’s an argument to be made that Google should really just be responsible for providing Gmail as a service. Anyone can create a client for Gmail and extend its features, so does it really matter that Gmail is still pretty frustrating to use?

Room for improvement

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Gmail is one of the apps that shows up on every new Android phone. The majority of desktop users are using Gmail via their browser. Gmail is everywhere, and its a pain to use.

Something as simple as attaching one or more emails as an attachment wasn’t possible until the most recent update. I had to forward 8 emails individually last month when trying to catch someone up on a project that had multiple email trails.

Thankfully with the latest update to Gmail, we are to forward an email as an attachment just like I can (and have been doing for years) in Outlook.

What’s new with the latest update?

You’ll be able to forward emails as attachments by selecting the “Forward as Attachment” option from the “more” overflow menu.

If you want to add a few more emails to the message, you can simply drag and drop them directly into the email draft in the composer. Emails are then included in your outgoing mail as .eml attachments.

According to Google, the update is not going out to everyone at the same time, so it might take a while before you can make use of the feature.
