Sony announced the launch of their Xperia 1 back in February at the MWC event, and if that timeline is anything to go by, we could expect the release of the Xperia 2 before the year is out.

Sony traditionally follows a biannual release calendar for its flagship line; and industry experts are estimating that the new phone will officially be announced at September’s IFA trade show in Berlin.

The name Xperia 2 might be confusing, we know. Sony released their Xperia XZ3 in 2018. It was assumed that the device to follow would be an Xperia XZ4, but that wasn’t the case. Sony named the next phone Xperia 1.

The Internet is littered with rumours about the upcoming Xperia 2. The manufacturing giant hasn’t given us any concrete information regarding the cost or launch date. But here’s what we do know about the Xperia 2.

Sony Xperia 2 – Known specs and rumours

Model numbers and display

It’s very strange that there is so little information out about a phone which is due to, reportedly, launch next month. As reported by Pocket Now, Sony listed two phones, with model numbers J8210 and J8010.

While the J8110 was the Xperia 1, talks are that the new listings could be linked to the Xperia 2. Both handset allegedly has a 5G modem, while the J8210 is said to have a full-HD 1920 x 1080 display.

In addition, trusted leaker Sudhanshu Ambhore shared renders on Twitter, giving us an idea of what the Xperia 2 could look like. While the details haven’t been confirmed as yet, Tech Advisor states:

“According to a source, Xperia 2 retains the triple-lens camera but moves it to a new position at the top left; and reduces the size of the display from 6.5in to 6.1in. This results in a reduced frame measuring 158×68.3×8.3mm, some 9mm shorter than Xperia 1.”

Sony S-Cinetone

Sony trademarked the name S-Cinetone with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in June; followed by trademark listings in Germany as well. The documents can be viewed on Lets Go Digital.

The S-Cinetone trademark documents include the following description: “smartphones; digital cameras; cinematographic machine and equipment.” That means that the Xperia 2 could possibly have a cinema ratio.

S-Cinetone will most likely be a software function that does not rely on a certain hardware component. It could be an evolution of the Cinema Pro mode on the Xperia.

If it’s anything like the Cinema Pro in the Xperia 1, users could probably expect to get a 4K UHD screen resolution. Although it is all still speculation at this point.

It was  previously it was rumoured that the Xperia 2 will have a triple camera setup instead of a dual-camera setup. It is possible that the trademark for S-Cinetone has to do with the camera layout and specs as well.

In addition, the Xperia 2 is said to run on a Qualcomm 855 processor and 6GB of RAM, while the 3 000 mAh battery will support wireless charging.
