We’ve been waiting Google’s Pixel 4 – said to be one of the biggest phones of 2019 – for the better part of a year, and the day has finally arrived.

Here’s what you need to know about the Made By Google event.

When is the Pixel 4 launch?

The event kicks off on Tuesday, 15 October at 16:00 Standard South African Time (SAST). If you’re watching from anywhere else in the world, it’ll be 10:00 EDT, 7:00 PDT, 15:00 BST or 1:00 AEDT.

The Made By Google event will be hosted in New York, and rumours of a 5G Pixel 4 launch is doing the rounds, as well as the much-anticipated Google Pixel Watch. And, of course, the Pixelbook 2.

The invite, which was sent out by Google, simply said: “Come see a few new things Made By Google”.

Big shoes to fill

The launch comes just weeks after Apple’s iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max launch, so Google will need to pull out all the stops to wow us.

The Pixel 4 series will serve as the bearer of Made By Google’s take on Android 10, which is currently the most popular operating system in the world.

In preparation for the launch, Google teamed up with A.J. Rezac from The Wanderer Travels to bring the ultimate #vanlife experience to live with a Pixel handset.

Pixel 4 specs and rumours

Google leaked an image of the Pixel 4 back in June, teasing fans with a photo that showed only the rear of the phone. Since then, several rendered sets found its way to the big bad Internet.

One of the renders showed a bezel on the front, similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy 8, in addition to two front cameras and a square bump on the back that housed the camera array and flash.

Google confirmed that the smartphone will feature multiple cameras in the rear square housing. In addition, it will have a face-unlock feature and motion sensors, as can be seen in Made By Google’s promo video.

Still a rumour at this point, but the Pixel 4 may be able to call for emergency assistance when you’re in a car crash, by using the phone’s accelerometer and microphone.

Another rumour is that the device will launch with a 90Hz display, similar to the Razer Phone 2. While most phones refresh at a rate of 60 frames per second, the Pixel 4 would be able to refresh at a rate of 90 fps.

When taking all of the above into consideration, the Pixel 4 may very well be a competent gaming phone. We live in hope!
