It is true that a smartphone can reflect your individual taste and personality. The most important aspect of a smartphone for me personally is its camera.
That’s why I bought the Huawei P30 Pro as soon as it was released in South Africa. The ability to take photos of the moon and have the device’s AI make me look like a better photographer than I am, is what makes me tick.
Unfortunately, mobile photographers are faced with one of two dilemmas: The flagship phones with the best cameras are usually out of our budget, or the smartphones on the market all have the same unimpressive camera setup.
Everyday run-of-the-mill smartphones simply won’t live up to our changing camera needs, and you’ll find that a budget device’s camera offers nothing to really write home about.
Look, I know that you need some iota of skill to take great photos. That being said, having the right gear – and advanced AI algorithms – makes the entire process just so much easier, and more enjoyable.
This is where Huawei’s P40 lite is gaining ground, taking names and stealing hearts at the moment. Let me tell you why.
The Huawei P40 lite features a unique quad-camera setup on the upper left corner of the device’s rear panel. Not only does it look sleek and, well, expensive, it also hints at the innovative tech hiding under the hood.
In fact, Huawei explained that it was challenging to incorporate the sensors into a simple yet sleek design because each sensor is unique and is different in appearance and size.
A thin yet durable metal frame around the quad-camera setup not only gives the device a premium, rounded finish, it also helps it stand out from the crowd.
Many ordinary smartphones with a dual or triple camera setup cannot meet consumers’ requirements, and professional cameras are expensive and not easy to use.
Huawei P40 lite’s quad-camera system supports Handheld Night Mode, as well as a 48MP Main Camera, an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens, a 2MP Macro Lens and a 2MP Bokeh Lens.
The quad-system enables photographers to capture wider, clearer and closer shots, even in low-light conditions. While it all works together fluidly, you’ll only be able to truly appreciate what the P40 lite camera is capable of by understanding how each lens works.
The Main Camera is capable of taking high-resolution photos, thanks to the integration of the Huawei P40 lite’s native resolution of 48MP and powerful chipset capabilities.
Along with that impressive snapper, another vital feature on the P40 lite is its multi-frame composition technology that intelligently combines multiple shots instantly to create an optimised photo, even when zoomed in.
The device also sports an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera with a built-in sensor measuring 1.12μm (micrometres). That will enable you to capture 140% more field of view than with an ordinary 78-degree wide-angle lens.
“Whether it’s for landscape, architecture or group photos, Huawei P40 lite is able to capture a wider angle of view and more content. Thanks to its advanced algorithms, Huawei P40 lite can reduce distortion for more natural and authentic portraits and landscape shots.”
Not that long ago, you had to invest in expensive lenses to capture macro shots. Not anymore; Huawei is revolutionising macro photography. The P40 lite is a powerhouse with a 40mm Macro Lens above a 2MP sensor that allows you to capture patterns and textures in phenomenal detail.
Whether you want to snap dewdrops hanging from a rose petal, the pattern on a leaf or a ladybug on a blade of grass, Huawei will help you fall in love with the micro world of macro photography all over again.
Taking good bokeh photographs used to require lots of know-how and pricey equipment. You’d need a fast aperture of at least f/2.8 in addition to long focal length and prime lenses.
The P40 lite has a very capable setup with an f/2.4 aperture, providing even faster shutter speeds which will reduce motion blur. The dedicated 2MP lens features advanced algorithms to create a shallow depth of field that will soften the background and bring the sharp detail of your subject into focus.
In conclusion, the P40 lite harnesses the power of artificial intelligence, making it easier than ever to capture natural bokeh effects without breaking the bank.
The front 16MP lens is equipped with 4-in-1 Light Fusion technology. According to Huawei, it can achieve “an equivalent sensitivity level of 2μm pixels” to allow more light into the sensor and create clear details.
“Under Super Night Mode, the camera can accurately detect dark environments and automatically activate algorithms. The powerful NPU AI algorithms can intelligently segment the subject and the background.”
Thanks to multi-frame enhancement, your photos will be brighter and clearer even in low-light conditions, while a single-frame optimisation highlights the subject and accentuates three-dimensional facial features.
Did I mention this all happens with just one tap? Impressive, I know.
Speaking of AI algorithms, the Huawei P40 lite’s advanced system also enhances a photo by extracting measurements of facial features from millions of images to generate a professional and polished photo automatically.
This is all done in real-time through a facial neural network algorithm. In addition, the algorithm can beautify special facial features such as contouring for eyes, eye makeup, lips and nose.
It also adjusts beautification solutions according to the subject’s age and gender. That means you will look picture-perfect in every selfie without needing a professional team equipped with a full range of beauty services.
The Huawei P40 lite is the first device from the P40 range to launch in South Africa. It can best be described as a premium smartphone with a budget price tag that will keep you connected and entertained for longer.
