Front Page Tech shared a viral video this week, claiming to contain exclusive leaks about the upcoming iPhone 12 series’ specs, design, display, camera, pricing, and more. Here’s what we know.
Other than the leaks shared by Max Weinbach, Jon Prosser from FPT says that the iPhone 12 Pro will feature a 120Hz display, along with a 4 400 mAh battery, improved FaceID, and a 3x zoom on the rear camera.
That reminds of us Ice Universe’s prediction back in July 2019, who was speculating at the time that Apple could be releasing a “switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate screen for it’s iPhone 12 series”.
According to Prosser, the iPhone 12 and 12 Max (could also be 12 Plus) will feature a Super Retina Display, made by BOE OLED.
However, the 6.1″ iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7″ 12 Pro Max models are said to have a Super Retina XDR screen with ProMotion; along with 10-bit colour depth. About the displays, though:
While both the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro will use OLED displays, it will be from different manufacturers. The iPhone 12 and 12 Max will reportedly use a cheaper BOE model, while the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will use Samsung OLED.
The base model and 12 Max will be powered by the A14 chip and 4GB RAM (not ideal, but better than nothing for the price); the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will have 6GB of RAM.
As per the leak, all the devices in the iPhone 12 series will support 5G: the base model and 12 Max will support Sub 6-GHz, while the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will have mmWave.
Back in January, Mehdi Hossein predicted that Apple allegedly planned to release the 12 series in two phases: the release of sub-6GHz in September 2020, and 5G devices which supports mmWave in 2021.
Soon after that, Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s iPhone 12 roll-out would be a “unified affair”, encompassing both 6GHz and mmWave technologies. That seems to check out now, based on Prosser’s leak.
We’ve included the prices (as per FPT) for the various models below along with Dollar/Rand exchange rate as it is at the time of publishing; however, this is just to give an indication of what to expect.
Any device (from any manufacturer) brought into South Africa will have a unique pricing system which we cannot compare to US or UK markets. That said, here are the details according to Front Page Tech:
|iPhone 12 base model||$649 (R11 890)||$749 (R13 700)||n/a|
|12 Max||$749 (R13 700)||$849 (R15 500)||n/a|
|The 12 Pro||$999 (R18 300)||$1 099 (R20 100)||$1 299 (R23 800)|
|12 Pro Max||$1 099 (R20 100)||$1 199 (R22 000)||$1 399 (R25 600)|
Lastly, availability. Prosser predicts that the iPhone 12 series will be unveiled in September 2020, but won’t ship until October 2020. He’s not the first to say this.
Back in April 2020, trusted analyst at TF International Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo, predicted the time frame; with a note that the COVID-19 pandemic could throw a spanner in the works and delay manufacturing.
