Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro review: A smartwatch behemoth to balance your life

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro is a defining moment in the evaluation of smartwatches.

Huawei Watch GT2 Pro

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro smartwatch is packed with useful tools, relevant data and sits at the cutting edge of smartwatch technology. Even if you’re not a fan of wearables, the GT 2 Pro might win you over with its elegance.

If you’re a self-achiever on an endless search for healthier ways to deal with the new normal – or you’re just actively trying to pursue a healthier lifestyle – then the GT 2 Pro will be a perfect match.

The smartwatch is fitted with Huawei’s own wearable chip, the Kirin A1. The dual-chip design comes complete with intelligent power-saving technology to keep you connected.

It (finally) combines the functionality of a smartwatch with a high-end premium design and superb quality. That said, it doesn’t really offer anything new from the Watch GT2. Here are my first impressions.

Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro review

Long-lasting battery life

One of the most important aspects of any smartwatch is its battery life. According to Huawei, the Watch GT 2 Pro lasts for two weeks, assuming certain levels of usage such as tracking your heart rate 24 hours a day, as an example.

I can confirm that this is indeed the case. I only had to charge it once at the start of my review period, and it was still far from depleted by the time I had to return the GT 2 Pro. That said, the battery life depends on how you use the watch.

A more vigorous approach to life will get you about 10 or 11 days on a single charge. That includes an average weekly workout of 90 minutes with the location settings enabled, along listening to 30 minutes worth of music playback.

The watch is also compatible with Huawei’s magnetic wireless charger and has the ability to charge wirelessly using Qi technology. You can, of course, use other compatible chargers as well.

Elegantly designed

Let’s be real: the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro is a beautiful piece of tech which is not only minimalist but comfortable too. It sports a titanium body, a sapphire crystal face and a ceramic backing.

Together, those elements bring you a smartwatch that embodies quality and contemporary craftsmanship. It is without a doubt one of the most durable yet elegant smartwatches on the market.

The smartwatch has an almost bezel-less textured exterior. This makes the classic round watch face less likely to scratch, even during extensive outdoor workouts. The focus here is on comfort and simplicity.

The strap really deserves its own section

And can we take a moment to appreciate the strap, please? Straps are my biggest peeve and the reason why most of my smartwatches end up unused in the bottom of a drawer. But not only is this one durable, it’s comfortable too.

The end result culminates in an integrated smartwatch which rests snugly and very comfortably on your wrist. It doesn’t budge or slide either, which ensures for accurate monitoring of health data.

My review unit featured a leather strap, but it only comes with a fluoroelastomer strap, which is a fluorocarbon-based synthetic rubber.

A personal assistant on your wrist

The Watch GT 2 Pro brings the world to you. It supports SMS and email notification, as well as updates from your calendar and social media accounts. You can also answer (or decline) incoming calls.

Smart Scenario Reminders are nifty features for those on the go as it allows you to glance at flight information and travel reminders simply by looking at your wrist.

Lost your phone? Use your smartwatch to track it down. The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro can maintain a Bluetooth connection with a compatible smartphone up to 150 metres away.

Manage your sleep with TruSleep 2.0 sleep tracking and use TruRelax pressure monitoring to find balance while living your most efficient life.

A sports trainer when you need it

Let’s not forget the Watch GT 2 Pro’s extensive workout modes which cover all your bases, including swimming, cycling, climbing, yoga, and skiing, as well as 19 professional indoor and outdoor workout modes.

In fact, there are more than 100 different work modes to choose from, and the built-in standalone GPS tracker means you’ll always stay on the right track, pun intended.

Outdoor modes

  1. Skiing
  2. Snowboarding
  3. Cross country skiing
  4. Golf
  5. Running
  6. Walking
  7. Mountaineering
  8. Hiking
  9. Trail running
  10. Cycling
  11. Swimming in open water
  12. Triathlon

Indoor modes

  1. Walking
  2. Running
  3. Cycling
  4. Swimming indoors
  5. Free training
  6. Elliptical machine
  7. Rowing machine

You can also listen to music while you work out, simply pair the watch with a set of speakers or earbuds via Bluetooth. You can download 2GB’s worth of music directly onto the watch, and this made me extremely happy for some reason.

Huawei Watch GT2 Pro: Conclusion

The Watch GT2 Pro is without a doubt Huawei’s most advanced smartwatch. There is a workout mode for every occasion, mood or lifestyle type, while it also monitors your heart rate 24 hours a day.

At R6 999, it is unfortunately out of reach for most South Africans. Some of the features are also reminiscent of its predecessor, the Watch GT2. Therefore, if you’re on a budget, you could consider the GT2 or even the GT2e.

You’ll get 2 weeks’ battery life with the GT 2 as well, and it also features Huawei’s own Kirin A1 chip but costs approximately R2 000 less. The Watch GT 2e is equipped with blood oxygen saturation (Sp02) monitoring as well.

While I truly loved the Watch GT2 Pro, I’m still extremely happy with my Watch GT 2e.
