HarmonyOS 2.0

Huawei first announced its all-scenario experience operating system, HarmonyOS, back in 2019. At the time, Huawei Consumer CEO, Richard Yu, said it was “completely different” than Apple and Android’s operating systems.

Yu said that consumers are expecting a “holistic intelligent experience across all devices,” and promises that that Harmony OS will live up to the expectations. He explained at the Huawei Developers Conference:

“To support this, we felt it was important to have an operating system with improved cross-platform capabilities. We needed an OS that supports all scenarios, that can be used across a broad range of devices and platforms, and that can meet consumer demand for low latency and strong security.”

Since then, a robust line-up of devices has been developed for the system, facilitating quick device discovery, instant connection, hardware collaboration, and resource sharing between multiple smart devices.

Launch in stages

At today’s Developer’s Conference, it was announced that “HarmonyOS will officially be open-source and developers will be able to gain access to emulators, SDK packages, and IDE tools”.

The open-source project, which is donated to OpenAtom Foundation, will be launched in stages with a mobile HarmonyOS beta release planned firstly for Chinese developers at the end of 2020.

“Starting on 10 September, HarmonyOS is open to 128KB-128MB IoT devices, such as smart TVs, wearables, cars and more. In April 2021, we will open it to 128MB-4GB devices and in October 2021, HarmonyOS will be opened for devices above 4GB”.

Huawei also launched the Huawei FreeBuds Pro, Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro, the MateBook X and MateBook 14, as well as the Huawei FreeLace Pro for “the ultimate noise-cancellation.
