Pixel 4 leak: Why Google ‘leaked’ their upcoming flagship phone on social media

Google tweeted the first official picture of the forthcoming Pixel 4 phone before rumours sully the phone’s release in October 2019. Here’s why it was a smart move.

Good one, Google. Taking to Twitter this week, Made By Google tweeted an official photo of their upcoming Pixel 4 phone, along with the caption:

“Well, since there seems to be some interest, here you go! Wait ’til you see what it can do.”

This moved left many netizens surprised. Not about the Pixel 4, but rather Google’s decision to get one up over the rumours and ‘leak’ the information on their own terms.

The ‘leak’ is unprecedented

Usually, companies like Samsung, Apple, and yes, even Google, will keep information about upcoming releases under wraps. At least until they can schedule a product announcement at their official events and expos.

Much like Apple did with their Worldwide Developers Conference, or how game developers only release trailers of their upcoming blockbuster games at the annual E3 Expo and E3 press conferences. Google spokesperson told The Verge:

“I wish I could share more, but can just confirm this is indeed Pixel 4, for now.”

Getting one over their competitors

There are a few reasons why Google did it, but it’s all speculation at this stage. A popular theory floating around the Twittersphere is that Google wanted to get ahead of Apple in terms of accusation that they copied the iPhone 11.

That would make sense, especially considering that Google’s Pixel 4 launch is scheduled for October, one month after the iPhone is expected to come out. Well played, Google, well played.

The second theory doesn’t really hold water.

They’re trying to throw us off

Another reason is that the Pixel 4 may be released well ahead of its ‘schedule’ October release date. One month ahead of the iPhone release perhaps?

This theory is a bit of the stretch since they only released the Pixel 3 a few months ago. Read more about Pixel here, and why customers are ditching Samsung for Google.

Will the Pixel 4 be available in South Africa?

Sadly, we don’t have an answer yet. When asked, Made By Google had this to say:

“We’re always looking into selling Google hardware in more countries, but we don’t have any news to share right now. Appreciate your understanding.”

Online interaction on fleek

And slightly off topic, may we point out that Google deserves a medal for their interaction with users on social media? See for yourself.
