Record gaming sales for ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’
Activision Blizzard has announced that first-year sales of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ are the highest in the history of the game.

Activision Blizzard has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has achieved the highest first-year sales in Call of Duty‘s history. However, the company did not provide the exact sales figure for the game.
The record achievement is especially notable as the sales in question only go up to 30 September. The game, which was released in October 2019, did not even take a full year to shatter the single-year sales record for the franchise.
Warzone Battle Royale helps improve sales
Activision also announced that two-thirds of Modern Warfare’s lifetime sales were digital. This is good for Activision as the company makes more money from digital game sales than from boxed copies.
Activision said the Battle Royale game Warzone had helped improve sales for Modern Warfare. The company has seen substantial growth in game sales for Modern Warfare as a result of fans who upgraded from Warzone, which is free to the paid game Modern Warfare.
Activision said the total hours played in the Call of Duty universe, which covers Modern Warfare and Warzone, were about seven times higher than compared to Black Ops 4. Modern Warfare and Warzone saw more than three times as many monthly active users than Black Ops 4 did during the same period in 2019.
Monthly active users grow strongly
“Console monthly active users grew strongly, while monthly active users on PC grew over tenfold compared to last year,” Activision said.
The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops Cold War, which launches later in November for PS4, Xbox One and PC, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The game will become incorporated into Warzone, but this will not happen until December.
