Following the South African government’s ban on public gatherings of more than 100 people, Reed Exhibitions made the hard decision of cancelling this year’s Comic Con in Cape Town.

Comic Con Cape Town postponed

Portfolio Director Carla Massmann said that the organising team was “deeply saddened and regrets this unavoidable turn of events”. However, it’s not the end of the line from Comic Con CPT just yet.

Comic Con Cape Town and the co-located Cape Town International Animation Festival will now be postponed until 24 April 2021, at the Cape Town Stadium.

Fans can turn to Comic Con Cape Town’s digital channels as regular updates will be posted on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and newsletter updates.

Comic Con Cape Town ticket refunds

Fans have two options: Purchased tickets can either be refunded or rolled over to the new dates in 2021. According to Reed Exhibitions, the “process will be managed by ticketing partner, Howler.

As for international talent booked to attend the event, Massmann explained that the team is staying in regular contact with the VIP guests:

“We are a close-knit global family. We stay in regular contact with them. Right up until this announcement they remained excited to attend the Con. They are just as disappointed as we are and we will keep you updated on all 2021 guest announcements in due course”.

The organisers confirmed earlier this year that Comic Book Illustrator and Artist, Sean Izaakse (The Thunderbolts, Avengers, Deadpool) would have attended Comic Con Cape Town.

Supporting aritsts online

Now that Artists’ Alley won’t be taking place this year, the organisers have vowed to still support artists in any way possible, including sharing links to their shops online.

“With so many Cons around the world being postponed or cancelled, we wanted to take this time to support our CONmunity. If you’re an artist, creator, or vendor who was planning to attend any show that was cancelled, add a link to your shop & photos of your work in this thread”.

Massmann assured fans that “Comic Con Cape Town is not saying goodbye, but rather, ‘see you all soon'”. Don’t be sad, use this additional time to create the perfect cosplay outfit.

Remember that the Comic Con Cape Town Regional Championships of Cosplay entries close on 3 April 2020.
