Comic Con Africa 2019 – Anthony Mackie cancels Comic Con Africa appearance

Due to the unprecedented success of Comic Con Africa 2018, the event will now take place over four days at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

Update 21 September 2019: Sorry to be the bearer of more bad news, but Marvel star Anthony Mackie cancelled his appeareacne at Comic Con for the second year in a row.

William Shatner, however, will still be here on all four days (at the time of publishing). Do note that schedules are prone to change without notice.

The Comic Con Africa show floor is open from Saturday 21 September to Tuesday 24 September, from 9:00 to 18:00. Panel discussions, photo opportunities and autographing will also take place during these time.


Update: Reed Exhibitions Africa and ReedPOP announced that Game of Thrones star Isaac Hempstead Wright would no longer be attending Comic Con Africa as he is obligated to attend the Primetime Emmy Awards Ceremony.

“With the greatest of remorse, Isaac has had to cancel his appearance at the Con and we are as disappointed as our fans. We are however excited to see Game of Thrones, with a record 32 Emmy nominations, take the Emmys by storm! We wish them luck.”

In other news, Comic Con will be hosting a free screening of Angry Birds 2 on 22 Sunday. Don’t dwadle, it’s first come first serve to the first 300. And don’t forget, William Shatner will be at Comic Con this year too!

Reed Exhibitions Africa and ReedPOP announced that the second edition of Comic Con Africa will take place from 21 to 24 September 2019, at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

This is to accommodate even more pop culture, cosplay and comic book fans who will be wanting to attend after the success of last year’s event.

More than 45 000 visitors, 212 exhibitors and 400 members of the media attended Comic Con Africa 2018, making it the must-attend event of the year. Here’s what you need to know.

When to attend Comic Con Africa

Get ready for four days of Comic Con Africa. Parking is available at Gallagher Convention Centre and will be R20.00 per car.

  • Saturday 21 September: 09:00 – 18;00
  • Sunday 22 September: 09:00 – 18:00
  • Monday 23 September: 09:00 – 18:00
  • Tuesday: 24 September: 09:00 – 18:00

All about tickets

Tickets are available through Computicket. Get your tickets online ahead of the show to avoid price increases. Do note: Tickets will be available at the door but sales do not begin until 9:00 each show day.

If you’re six years or older, you’ll need a ticket to enter. Children under the age of six will be admitted free charge; no tickets required. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are non-refundable. Change of advertised guests due to work commitments or other circumstances does not qualify for ticket refunds. Every effort will be made to replace the guest.

William Shatner

Trekkies, rejoice! Organisers confirmed that Emmy Award-winning actor, producer and director William Shatner will be appearing at Comic Con Africa this month.

Shatner is an undeniable cultural icon, most famously known for his portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise in the Star Trek franchise

Isaac Hempstead Wright

Isaac Hempstead Wright – known as Bran Stark and The Three-Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones – will be at Comic Con on Monday 23 September and Tuesday 24 September.

Game of Thrones fans can expect to see Isaac on main stage panel discussions as well as photo and autograph signings. Details and pricing will be made public in due course.

Anthony Mackie

MarAnthony Mackie received global recognition for his portrayal of Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame.

Fans can also look forward to Mackie’s upcoming appearances in Disney Plus’ limited six-episode series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which will be released in 2020.

Mackie will only be available on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September. Add-on tickets will be available for those who want to meet with Mackie for an autograph and the obligatory selfie.

Donny Cates

Leading comic book writer Donny Cates will be in attendance. Cates is most well known for Thanos, Doctor Strange, Damnation, God Country, Buzzkill, The Ghost Fleet, The Paybacks, Interceptor, Star Trek, and Atomahawk.

In addition, Cates will be joined by Will Sliney, another prominent comic book writer and artist who has worked on Spider-Man and Star Wars.

Nolan North and Troy Baker

Nolan North, an actor and a voice actor, is most famously known as Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series, and Desmond Miles from the Assassin’s Creed series.

Troy Baker’s performances include Joel from The Last of Us and Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite. He has been nominated three times for Best Performer at the BAFTA’s for Uncharted 4 as Sam Drake, for Far Cry 4 as Pagan Min, and for Joel.

Fans can also look forward to his appearance Hideo Kojima’s upcoming Death Stranding, starring alongside Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen.

eSports

Comic Con will be partnering with Telkom VS Gaming for the second consecutive year to bring the very best of
eSports to the event.

Telkom VS Gaming will be hosting two Masters tournaments – one for South Africa’s leading competitive game, DOTA2, and the other for the popular objective-based, multiplayer first-person shooter game, CS:GO.

“Last year’s Comic Con Africa was such a huge success due to the incredible partnerships we had, and we are thrilled that Telkom VS Gaming has once again come on board to support us. Gaming is a massive focus for Comic Con Africa and we saw the success last year of combining pop culture and esports. This opens esports up to an even wider audience that attends Comic Con Africa.”
