A surge of attacks by powerful gangs has increased as twelve people kidnapped while travelling by bus in Haiti, officials said on Monday.
The US Justice Department charged a Haitian-Chilean man Thursday with conspiracy to commit murder for his role in the assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moise last July.
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry told AFP in an interview Monday that he was targeted in an assassination attempt during weekend national day celebrations.
“Are they going to deport us or kick us out of here?” asked one of the hundreds of migrants waiting nervously to see what would happen.
Speaking in Del Rio, Mayorkas said Haitian migrants were receiving fake information about being able to stay in the United States.
“Four mercenaries were killed, two were intercepted under our control. Three policemen who had been taken hostage have been recovered,” said Leon Charles, the head of Haiti’s national police.
President Jovenel Moise has been assassinated during the early hours of Wednesday, and political tensions in Haiti have escalated beyond control.
