How we dress is sometimes determined by the type of celebrities we look up to, the fashion icons we follow, or the music we listen to. Students are also often influenced by peer pressure and the type of body image that we have of ourselves.
Sure, all this can all influence your look but it’s still important for you to do YOU.
Remember that if you are a student, you probably are just leaving adolescence, often a confusing stage because it is when you may still be searching for your personal identity.
It’s a time to express yourself through clothes and hairstyles. What a student chooses to wear, on campus or off, is a way of expressing themselves and showing how they want to be viewed by the world.
Fashion is also a form of entertainment and gives you an opportunity to think independently. It is up to us to decide what to wear and not wear.
Take a few style tips from these five trend-setting singers, four South African and one international, who flaunt their unique personal style with pride.
“I wear things that make me feel good, it always changes and always switches up. It just depends on my mood. I don’t have any specific criteria.”

Even though these five have a style you may itch to copy, watch out for being overly concerned with trying to fit in, or copy others, in case it leads you to make less than ideal life choices.
Girls, for example, may look at magazine models or Instagram influencers and immediately want to look like them. They may not realise that, if taken to the extreme, this may lead to unhealthy lifestyle changes such as low self-esteem or developing an eating disorder.
Young men and boys are also affected too; they will see body builders and immediately want to be like them which results in taking supplements.
Many also watch TV reality shows and wish they could keep up with their favourite celebrities’ style, such as Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Project Runway, or in South Africa, Being Bonang and Living The Dream With Somizi.
If you do not have the money to shop at high-end stores for designer clothes, don’t get stressed. Remember that many celebrities depend on the help of professionals to choose their outfits.
Rather develop your “look”, stick to your unique style, and then go out and rock it!
