England booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup as they beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties in their round of 16 clash in Moscow.

The first 90 minutes finished in dramatic fashion as Colombia’s Barcelona defender, Terry Mina’s header cancelled out Harry Kane’s penalty from three minutes before the hour mark.

This took the game to extra time, where no further inroads would be made by either side, sending the side to the dreaded penalty shootout.

The two main marksmen from either side, Kane and his Colombian counterpart, Radamel Falcao took up the spot kick responsibilities first up and neither disappointed, as they converted their efforts.

It was Liverpool skipper, Jordan Henderson would be the first to fail to convert, as his effort – the third for England – would be saved by David Ospina.

Colombia’s Mateus Uribe send his effort against the crossbar, restoring parity, before teammate, Carlos Bacca had his brilliantly saved by Jordan Pickford.

Eric Dier was the hero when he calmly slotted the last penalty on the night to send England through to the next round.

The win would be England’s first via penalties in the World Cup, as they failed in their most recent attempt when they were eliminated by Portugal at the same stage in Germany 2006.
