The South African soccer season kicks off on  Friday, 18 August when defending champions Wits host Cape Town City at the Bidvest Stadium.

Last season was a nail-biter with Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns remaining in contention almost until the very last day of the season.

The 2017/18 PSL season promises to be equally exciting and if the bookies are to be believed, Mamelodi Sundowns could go on to make history.

The Brazilians have been tipped to win a record eight title heading into the 22nd PSL season. Sundowns are already well ahead of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates (four titles each), but it won’t be easy.

They open their account against SuperSport United over the weekend and coach Pitso Mosimane has already said he backs his charges to reclaim the crown.

“We always believe that we can get it [the title] back. We always believe that we can protect it, but we could not protect it [last season]. I think we should give credit to Wits because they fought very hard to get it.”

“I don’t think we did ourselves justice in the last four games of the season. We got four draws. Maybe we did not want it or maybe it was meant for them. We have to be honest and say we ran out of legs in the end.”

Soweto giants Pirates (10/1) and Chiefs (15/4), aren’t the favourites, but the PSL has been a rollercoaster ride in recent times. Bidvest Wits (16/5), SuperSport United (17/2) and Cape Town City FC (11/1) are all in contention according to the bookies.
