Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch picked up where he left off last season in the Carling Black Label Cup scoring a sensational goal as the Buccaneers regained the trophy.

Lorch curled a shot past Bruce Bvuma in the Kaizer Chiefs goal from outside the penalty area to send the Sea Robbers fans into raptures at a sold-out FNB Stadium.

The midfielder capped a campaign when he was named PSL player of the season last term with a goal at the 2019 African Cup of Nations, helping Bafana Bafana eliminate Egypt.

Chiefs squandered plenty of chances, none better than the one that fell to Lazarous Kambole midway through the first half. Ramahlwe Mphahlele had crafted some space and put in the perfect ball but Kambole couldn’t keep his shot down when it seemed easier to score.

Augustine Mulenga had given Pirates the lead and just before the half-hour mark, Lorch doubled the advantage with his beautifully taken goal.

Orlando Pirates recorded their fifth Carling Black Label Cup trophy win in seven attempts and became the first of the two sides to score two first-half goals in the fixture.

The game proved to be an open one with Pirates fielding a team loaded with attacking quality, leaving just one man lying deep in the midfield. Chiefs couldn’t make the most of the space and opportunities. Billiat came close with a well-struck shot on 68 minutes but Wayne Sandilands was equal to it.

Pirates fans were left seething as a poor challenge from Bernard Parker left Fortune Makaringe looking worse for wear. Their fury was compounded by the action taking place in stoppage time.

Orlando Pirates begin their Premiership campaign next Saturday against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Orlando Stadium. Kaizer Chiefs make the short trip to Tembisa to face Highlands Park next Sunday at the Makhulong Stadium.

The injury concern aside coach Milutin Sredojevic should be pleased with the outing despite criticizing the fan’s picks before the match.
