Watch out Bryson DeChambeau!

The big-hitting American has been making waves of late thanks to his impressive physique and booming drives.

But he could have competition in the long driving stakes after South Africa’s Wilco Nienaber who unleashed a 439-yard (401m) monster during Round 1 of the Joburg Open at Randpark GC on Thursday.

The 20-year-old Nienaber, who only turned professional last year, was aided it must be said by the nearly 5 800-foot altitude in Gauteng.

Standing on the par-5, fourth tee, Nienaber let rip, leaving those watching in awe.

SuperSport commentator and former professional Tony Johnstone was lavish in his praise of the tee shot which finished just off the fairway.

“Wilco is a massive talent and to hit a golf ball that far – 439 yards – is absolutely mind-numbing,” he said.

“Three hundred yards is a big drive, 400 yards astounding. But 439 yards is, well, freakish.”

Nienaber himself was more reserved in his self-appraisal of the shot.

“I guess it was a decent drive,” he modestly said.

Nienaber’s second shot finished five feet from the hole, but he missed the putt, settling for a birdie four.

Nienaber went on to post an opening round of 8-under par, 63, to share the 18-hole lead with fellow South African Shaun Norris.
