Tour de France: Daryl Impey inclusion makes that three South Africans on the world stage

Daryl Impey joins up with countrymen Reinardt Janse van Rensburg and Jay Thomson at this year’s Tour de France.

It has been confirmed that Daryl Impey has been included in the Mitchelton-Scott team that will compete in this year’s Tour de France.

Who is Daryl Impey?

Daryl Impey is a 33-year-old celebrated road cyclist that rides for Mitchelton-Scott. He has successfully represented the Australian road race cycling team for a number of years, the most notable victory being at the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under.

His personal achievement came in 2009 when he won the Tour of Turkey circuit, despite being involved in a controversial run-in with Theo Bos, who had pushed him into the barriers.

Who is part of Mitchelton-Scott at the Tour de France?

He will be taking part in the sixth Tour de France, alongside his teammates, Jack Bauer, Luke Durbridge, Mat Hayman, Michael Hepburn, Damien Howson, Mikel Nieve and Adam Yates.

Impey made the announcement on Twitter, stating that he could not hold his excitement in joining his two other countrymen in the tournament, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg and Jay Thomson.

When does the Tour de France kick off?

The first week of the Tour de France is set to kick off this week and the one thing every cyclist fan is looking out for is the bunch sprints. The opening two days of the race will be held in the Vendèe region and later head to Brittany, in stage four of the race.

The fact that there will be no prologue in this year’s tournament means that whoever wins the first stage will also get to dawn the yellow jersey.

In 2013, Impey became the first South African to wear the coveted yellow jersey in Stage 6 and 7 of the Tour de France.

The competition kicks off with Impey in the finest form of his career, having already won the Town Down Under circuit in January and received a stage and point classification at the Criterium du Dauphine.
