South Africa’s swimming star Tatjana Schoenmaker has set a new Olympic record in posting the fastest time in the heats for the women’s 100m breaststroke.

Tatjana Schoenmaker, who is considered the favourite for the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke, stormed to victory in Heat 5, touching the wall in 1:04.82.

That time wound up a full 0.70 faster than second-quickest semi-final qualifier, American Lydia Jacoby.

Pre-race favourite Lilly King, also of the USA, recorded the third-fastest time in winning Heat 6 in 1:55.55.

The semi-finals will take place on Monday at 03:50 and 03:56 SA time.
