Schoenmaker, who boasted the quickest time heading into the final, appeared to be well on course for victory but was reeled in by fast-finishing 17-year-old American Lydia Jacoby.

Jacoby stopped the clock in a time of 1:04.95 with Schoenmaker having to settle for silver in 1:05.22 with world record holder in the event, American Lilly King, picking up bronze in 1:05.54.

Schoenmaker was all-smiles after confirmation she was an Olympics medal winner.
