The US Open is underway and there was one shock exit in the first round of the men’s draw of 2022’s final Grand Slam event.

Tsitsipas suffers shock US Open exit

Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded 4th at the tournament, was dumped out in four sets by Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan. Galan clinched the victory on his ninth match point against Tsitsipas. The vanquished Greek star has never been beyond the third round at the US Open.

Evergreen Andy Murray still standing

35-year-old veteran Scotsman Andy Murray got the better of Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. It was an impressive display from Murray to dispose of the 24th seed and book his place in the second round.

This match also took place on the 10th anniversary of Murray’s first major title. Murray won the first of his three Grand Slams at the US Open in 2012. That win ended Britain’s 76-year wait for a men’s champion at the majors.

Medvedev cruises through

Daniil Medevedev launched the defence of his US Open crown with a straight sets win over American Stefan Kozlov. Kozlov is a man who Medvedev enjoyed many tussles with in their junior playing days.

World No 1 Medvedev, bidding to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open since Roger Federer in 2008, cruised into the second round with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 triumph.

Kyrgios on fire against his good pal

Flamboyant Aussie Nick Kyrgios outclassed compatriot and good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3 6-4 7-6(4) to reach the second round. 2022 continues to be a superb year for Kyrgios, who describes the experience of playing against his doubles partner as “really uncomfortable”.
