South Africa’s Lloyd Harris progressed to a Grandslam round of 16 for the first time in his career on Saturday night in the US Open.

Harris enjoyed strong crowd support and there were even a few Springbok jerseys dotted around Flushing Meadow.

The 24-year-old South African broke serve five times and hit 26 winners to oust the seventh seed 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the relatively quick time of two hours and 11 minutes.

In his post-match interview following his straight-sets victory over Canadian seventh seed Denis Shapovalov, Harris revealed what might have given him a boost to make quick work of a player ranked 36 places above him.

When asked about his love for coffee, Harris revealed his pre-match coffee order: “I had a double shot flat white before I came out here and it seemed to give me enough energy.”

Harris, who also beat Shapovalov earlier in the year in Dubai, said of the achievement of making the top 16 at a major: “The fourth round is obviously a major accomplishment for me, it’s my first one ever, and I’m looking forward to the next one. I can’t wait to be back. Everything has been coming together this season. I feel confident in my game and I want to keep the momentum going.”

Harris will meet the big-serving Reilly Opelka in the fourth round of the US Open.
