Lloyd Harris’ dream run at the US Open in New York may have come to an end in the quarter-finals on Wednesday – but it did leave him an even wealthier young man!

Harris, still only 24-years-old, lost in straight sets to Germany’s Alexander Zverev 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows in what was the Capetonian’s best performance to date in a Grand Slam.

Harris beat no fewer than THREE seeded players (Karen Khachanov – 25th, Denis Shapovalov – 7th and Reilly Opelka – 22nd) en route to the quarter-finals in a truly remarkable string of results.

Harris had entered the tournament ranked 46th in the world, but thanks to his run into the last eight he will move up to 31st when the updated rankings are released next Monday.

Harris also took home a cool $425 000 (R6 million) for his his four victories in the Big Apple.

In addition, unknown to many, Harris also took part in the men’s doubles where he and his Israeli partner Jonathan Erlich lost in the second round.

That was worth an additional $17 000 (R240 000) to each player.

That brought Harris’ total winnings at the 2021 US Open to R6.24 million at the exchange rate at the time of publishing.

This year’s US Open offered total prize money of a staggering $57.5 million (R814 million).
