South African tennis ace Lloyd Harris retired due to injury in his Barcelona Open third round encounter against Australian 10th seed Alex De Minaur on Friday.

De Minaur took the first set 6-0 before Harris called it quits.

Capetonian Harris, 25, had been suffering from back spasms and was forced to throw in the towel after just 20 minutes.

Harris entered the tournament ranked 40th in the world and is projected to move up one place to 39th when the next official rankings are released.

De Minaur will face British fourth-seed Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals after he beat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 7-5, 6-7 (11/9), 6-4 in a three hour and 25 minute marathon clash.
