South Africa’s Kevin Anderson has set up a round two clash against world No 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia at Wimbledon.

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson has set up a round two clash against world No 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia at Wimbledon.

The match will take place on Wednesday, 30 June.

Both players came through four-set matches as the year’s only grass court grand slam opened under overcast and rainy skies on Monday.

Anderson beat Chilean qualifier Marcelo Tomás Barrios Vera 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in a match which lasted three hours and 11 minutes.

Earlier in the first match on Centre Court, Novak Djokovic dropped the opening set to British teenager Jack Draper before running out a comfortable 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 winner in two hours and two minutes.

Anderson and Djokovic have faced each other on 11 occasions to date with the Serbian superstar holding a 9-2 advantage.

The pair have faced each other on three previous occasions at Wimbledon, including the final in 2018 which Djokovic won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).

Their most memorable battle on the grass at SW19 came in the Round of 16 in 2015 when Anderson won the opening two sets in tiebreakers only to lose the match in five sets, 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 6-4, 7-5.

Their first encounter was in 2011 in the second round in a match Novak Djokovic won comfortably 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Anderson, now 35, has seen his ranking drop to 103rd from a career high of fifth having been beset by injuries in recent years. He’s only played 10 matches to date in 2021, winning five and losing five.

Meanwhile, Djokovic will be eyeing a sixth Wimbledon title and a record-equaling 20th grand slam.
