South Africa’s Lloyd Harris stumbled at the first hurdle after losing his first round French Open match at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

Harris, the world No 37, lost in straight sets to French home favourite Richard Gasquet.

Gasquet, the world No 70, won 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in a match which lasted an hour and 52 minutes.

It’s been a struggle in 2022 for 25-year-old Lloyd Harris, particularly on clay, and he will no doubt be looking forward to the upcoming grass season.

Meanwhile, Gasquet will play American Sebastian Korda in the second round in Paris after he beat Australian John Millman 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) in his opening round encounter.

Harris was the lone South African in the 128-man draw following the retirement of compatriot Kevin Anderson earlier this month.
