The pick of the weekend’s Telkom Knockout quarterfinal fixtures happens to be the last one as Kaizer Chiefs host Supersport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

This will be the third meeting already between these two sides this season, as they battled it out over two legs of the MTN8 semifinals earlier in the campaign.

On that occasion, it was the Pretoria outfit who prevailed, edging the Soweto giants 1-0 in the second leg after playing to a thrilling two-all stalemate in the previous encounter.

All three of Supersport’s goals came from the boot of Bradley Grobler, who is not available for the encounter and has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing a groin operation.

Matsatsansa will also be without captain Dean Furman, who is set to miss the rest of the year’s action after dislocating his shoulder in a training ground accident.

Telkom Knockout quarterfinals: What the teams are saying

The two Bafana players join a growing injury list, which features Fagrie Lakay, Evans Rusike and Thabo Mnyamane, giving coach Kaitano Tembo a few headaches ahead of the crucial cup tie.

“We are little bit thin up front, we don’t have a lot of options, but at the same time we need to believe in what we have at the moment and give confidence to the guys that are playing and believe in them, that is the only way they can get better,” said Tembo.

Their opponents’ physio has also worked overtime during the season, as the Glamour Boys have had a torrid time of it regarding injuries.

Former Supersport frontman Lebogang Manyama is set to only return to action in December after being involved in a car accident last month, while Leonardo Castro only returned to action in last weekend’s Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates.

This has meant that coach Giovanni Solinas has had to chop and change more often than not throughout the campaign.

“[Leonardo] Castro was injured for one month-and-a-half; Lebo [Manyama] got injured [in a car accident] … You know, these are key players for us, this is the problem,” Solinas said.

“Yes, we need consistency, but we also need to play with the same players more frequently.

“But it’s not [possible] sometimes. Yes, sometimes it’s my decision, but sometimes injuries force me to change.”

Kaizer Chiefs vs Supersport United: Head to head

Supersport United have been somewhat of a bogey side for Kaizer Chiefs of late, especially in cup matches where they have won three of the last five encounters, with Amakhosi claiming just one win.

It’s even stevens as far as league action is concerned, as both teams have claimed one win apiece in the last five, with the rest ending in draws.
