Cape Town City celebrate winning the Telkom Knockout. (Gallo)
Eight teams remain in the Telkom Knockout and, by the end of the weekend, it will be four as cup action resumes on Saturday. The first round provided one or two upsets as both last season’s finalists were swiftly dumped out on the first hurdle.
Mamelodi Sundowns were also on the wrong end of a shock result as they crashed out of yet another cup competition this season, having been eliminated from the CAF Champions League not so long after a first round exit in the MTN 8.
Having recently registered their first win this season in the first round, Platinum Stars quickly made it two in their midweek PSL encounter against Ajax Cape Town. They will look to clinch their third on the trot when they clash with Bloem Celtic on Saturday.
Later on Saturday, Orlando Pirates will look to put the disappointment of their home league defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns behind them as they try to advance to the semis at Polokwane City’s expense.
With the defence of their league title seemingly faltering, Wits will look towards this particular competition for a chance at silverware this season. It will not be a walk in the park as they face a Baroka side that have looked like they mean business.
Fresh off knocking Mamelodi Sundowns out of the competition, Chippa United have other giants on their site as they host Kaizer Chiefs at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Sunday’s only fixture. The visitors will hope their extreme lack of consistency in the league does not spill over to cup competition, as they look to follow up their impressive win in the first round with another convincing one in the quarter-finals.
