Sam Cane celebrated his 100th match for the Chiefs with his side clinging on for a hard-earned win over the Highlanders on Friday.

It was a slow start from both teams with two penalties, slotted by Damian McKenzie, putting the Chiefs ahead after 20 minutes.

The Highlanders soon hit back – with a nifty string of passes that saw Fletcher Smith deliver the chip kick that sent Waisake Naholo over the try line.

Not long before the break, the Chiefs got their first try on the board. After messing up a line-out, the hosts somehow recovered and McKenzie kick found Sean Wainui who passed to Solomon Alaimalo for the try to help them to a 13-7 half-time lead.

After the restart, the Chiefs scored first with Nathan Harris wriggling his way over after recylcing the ball.

But the Highlanders kept on pushing and soon responded with a Tevita Li taking the scores to 20-12.

The scores continued to shift with the Highlanders taking the lead through a Sio Tomkinson try but the Chiefs responding soon after through Wainui.

Sloppy skills from the Highlanders ensured the Chiefs stayed ahead and managed to hold on for an important win.
