Super Rugby Highlights: Reds 20-14 Bulls [video]

The Bulls’ tour of Australasia got off to a disappointing start as they suffered a 20-14 defeat at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday.

The visitors were on the board as early as the fifth minute when some bruising work by the forwards got them to their opponents’ five metre line. This gave them their backs a three-on-one advantage out wide as the ball found fullback, Warrick Gelant who ran through untouched for the first try.

Handre Pollard converted the try to make it 7-0 to his side, before the hosts responded with three points from James Tuttle in the 23rd minute after the Bulls were penalised for offside.

Barely a minute later, Bulls winger, Travis Ismael gathered a pass just outside his own 22 before sprinting all the way to the Reds’ 22, unleashing scrumhalf Andre Warner, who dotted down for the visitors second. A successful conversion made it 14-3 in the away side’s favour.

Moments before the break, the hosts had something to show for their part in the contest, when Caleb found the chalk to make it 14-10 after his try was converted.

They would get in front for the first time in the game soon after the break as Filipo Daugunu pinned his ears back for another five pointer, with Tuttle adding an extra two from the tee to make it 17-14 to the hosts.

The visitors’ response was fraught with ill-discipline as they were constantly penalised, especially at scrum time and, it was only up until five minutes from the final whistle where the Reds punished them – adding another three points after a high tackle from Marnitz Boshoff.

The hosts would weather the Bulls’ efforts at finding a late score and held on for their second successive home victory.
