Sundowns new boy Affonso backed by compatriot Sirino

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Gaston Sirino is looking forward to establishing a lethal strike partnership with Uruguayan countryman Mauricio Affonso.

Affonso was unveiled by Sundowns this week and Sirino was among the first players to welcome him to the squad.

The lanky 27-year-old Uruguayan has a style of play that contrasts sharply with Sirino’s but should also compliment Downs creative force.

Affonso joined Sundowns from Peruvian club Allianza Lima and will give the Tshwane club another dimension to their attack and a physical presence that will be welcome in Caf competition.

“We are getting along well already and he hasn’t been here for long,” Sirino told the Sundowns website.

“I think he is going to do well and I believe we can form a strong partnership together this coming season for sure.

“From what I can see, we could form a dynamic partnership. Affonso has good touches, holds the ball off well and we have been linking up well in training. I think he will adapt to the football here.” 

Sundowns targeting Champions League

Sirino believes that with Affonso added to their already impressive squad Sundowns will be aiming to retain their PSL title as well as pushing for continental glory in the Caf Champions League.

Sundowns were beaten semi-finalists in last year’s competition, going down to Wydad Casablanca in the final four.

Masandawana have focused their pre-season on Caf preparations and as such will be playing matches across the continent and setting up camp outside of South Africa’s borders.

“I am excited about this new season. And I think if we are able to get a domestic title we would have done well. It is also important to keep pushing hard in the CAF Champions League, and this is why I am looking forward to travelling with Affonso out of the country for our pre-season.

“I have spoken to Affonso about how tough it is to play in the Champions League. I told him the teams are physical and play at a very fast pace. So I am excited to see what we can do together,” Sirino added.

Sundowns begin their PSL title defence on 3 August when they face Supersport United at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
