Stone-faced Pitso Mosimane says he is not excited about winning the PSL

An emotionally drained Pitso Mosimane has expressed his disappointment with with how things went for his Mamelodi Sundowns team this season despite the club recording a record ninth title.

It was also a massive personal milestone for the coach as he became the first manager to win four PSL titles with the same club.

Speaking to Supersport after the 1-0 win over Free State Stars that gave Sundowns the title win, Mosimane said the issues between himself and the league left a bad taste in his mouth. The PSL appear to still be set on appealing the decision not to dock Sundowns a point for fielding Wayne Arendse against Wits last year. Even with the loss of a point Sundowns would still have defended their PSL title so you’d think this victory would be something to savour but a muted Mosimane said this was not a nice way to win.

“A big game, a tough game, very emotional for me. As I said this is bigger than any other league titles that we have won,” Mosimane said in his post match interview.

“There are a lot of issues around this title. As I said and am still saying, I am not excited about the league title. I’m happy for the people who came, I am happy for the club, I’m happy for the players but it was a hard fought one and, especially for me, it created a lot of enemies. You now… it’s not nice… it’s not nice to win a title like this.”

Mosimane said Sundowns were completely focused on putting away Free State Stars and having claimed a first half goal, didn’t need to concern themselves with what was going on elsewhere.

The coach said that the club’s continental experience helped them put together a clinical performance under pressure.

When asked if he was getting updates from Orlando, Mosimane responded” No. We had to win this game, and we got the goal in the first half. When we score a goal in the first half, we have a lot of experience playing against teams like Wydad and Al-Ahly, we know how to manage the game.”

Mosimane was eager to share the plaudits for the record breaking win with his support staff. The only time his monotone broke in the interview on Supersport was when he had the opportunity to introduce his backroom staff.

“No man is an island and I would never have done this without support. There is no man that is successful that says ‘me me me’.”

Mosimane becomes the joint most successful manager in PSL history, equalling the record held by Gavin Hunt and Gordon Igesund jointly.
