South Africa’s Stephen Mokoka won his third Cape Town Marathon title on Sunday, defending his 2021 title in impressive fashion.

Mokoka, who also triumphed in 2018, stopped the clock in a time of 2:09:58.

Ethiopia’s Derseh Kindie Kassie took second (2:11:26) with compatriot Dagnachew Adere Maru (2:11:52) rounding out the podium in third.

The women’s race was won in a new record course time of 2:24:02 by Ethiopia’s Meseret Dinke Meleka.

Both winners picked up R250 000 for their efforts with Meleka banking an additional R100 000 for her new record.

First ever Cape Town Marathon wheelchair event

Earlier, American Aaron Pike (1:40:15) won the first ever Cape Town Marathon men’s wheelchair title ahead of South Africa’s Ernst van Dyk (1:44:02).

The women’s wheelchair title was won by Brazil’s Vanessa Cristina De Souza in 1:57:48.
