Bafana Bafana have nine toes on the plane to AFCON 2023 but only just after a howler from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The national team edged Liberia on Tuesday night to all but book second spot in the Group K. But it wasn’t without tension.

Broos and Williams saved by Lepasa, Mayambela

Zakhale Lepasa was handed a start by under-pressure coach Hugo Broos and duly obliged by opening the scoring early in the first half.

But the home team fired themselves level thanks William Jebor Liberia and Bafana No 1 Williams, who made a meal of a fairly soft effort.

Williams was saved when Mihlali Mayambela restored Bafana’s lead early in the second half. And the away team then held on to all but ensure they finish second to Morocco and book themselves a place in Cameroon next year.

Williams will not want to watch the replays. Now all eyes will be on Broos and whether he keeps his job after a poor couple of displays.

BROOS WAS WARY OF SYNTHETIC PITCH

“We gave them hope and belief on Friday so it is up to us to show from the beginning of the game that they don’t have to believe that they don’t have to have that hope to have a good result,” the Bafana coach said as quoted by Goal.

“It is tough, I did not see the weather and pitch. But I think the synthetic pitch is always a little bit tricky but okay.

“It is not enough to be only the better team and that is what Liberia proved and showed us last week. It is up to Bafana not to make the same mistakes and to begin the game ready.”
