Al Ahly continued their perfect start to the league season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Ghazl El-Mahalla, with goals from Percy Tau and Bruno Savio paving the way to victory.

It was a memorable return to goal-scoring form for Tau, who had last scored in the league on 25 November 2021 against Smouha.

After the game, coach Marcel Koller praised the performance of the Bafana Bafana playmaker.

“The player was injured, so it was necessary for him to get a chance for me to see him. I knew that Tau could play as a striker and he played very well, but he wasn’t 100% fit yet due to him returning from an injury.”

You can see the well-taken goal from Tau below:

Earlier this year, Tau had been at the centre of numerous Al Ahly exit rumours, and at one stage it almost seemed certain that he was set to leave the Egyptian club after the departure of Pitso Mosimane.

However, it’s become clearer than ever that Tau is committed to staying at Al Ahly, as repeatedly highlighted by his agent Mmatsatsi Sefalafala.

“Percy is very much contracted to Al Ahly,” Sefalafala told KickOff recently. “He will remain with the club. He is very happy, as you have seen on various social media platforms. He is very happy, and very content where he is.”

Several weeks ago, Tau also memorably claimed his second trophy with Al Ahly as he produced a cameo off as a substitute in the 2-0 win over arch-rivals Zamalek. For Al Ahly, it was their record-extending 12th Egyptian Super Cup title.

After the game, Tau memorably celebrated the occasion as he posted photos of him holding the trophy and with a winner’s medal.

Speaking about this achievement, he admitted it was an extra special feeling after all the struggles he’s endured on the injury front.

“Ja, look, I’m happy we’ve got the cup and what a way to start the season … This one is special because of all the injuries I had last season, so it’s always good to win this one and give back to the fans for their support.”

Tau has undoubtedly reached a key crossroad in his career. The South African has been battling with a wide variety of injuries of late, but remains determined to revive his career at Al Ahly.

After all his previous struggles with injury, it’s crucial for the talented playmaker to finally enjoy an injury-free spell, and he will be hoping for a reversal in fortunes as he heads into the new year.
