Casemiro’s bullet header opened the scoring midway through the first half before Marcus Rashford’s effort took a deflection off of Newcastle defender Sven Botman to double the lead, going down as own goal by the Magpies man.

Newcastle did test David De Gea’s goal during the second half, but after defending stoutly, the Reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius’ heroics.

Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as Manchester United manager, in his first season since joining the renowned club from Ajax Amsterdam.

After joining the club, Ten Hag insisted that Manchester United bought Ajax duo Antony and Lisandro Martinez. The players played under him at the Dutch club and on Sunday the trio of them recreated a dance they invented during their time in Amsterdam.

“We have a history together, Licha and Antony in Amsterdam we did some dancing and I hope we can do it even more in the future,” Ten Hag said when asked about their unique celebration.

After the on-field celebrations at Wembley, the Manchester United boss was congratulated by the club’s executives, including Sir Alex Ferguson, who warmly embraced Ten Hag.

“He [Sir Alex] was there after the match. He is a happy man tonight,” the Manchester United manager said about his meeting with Fergie.
