Footage and images have emerged showing lasers being directed at Liverpool star Mohamed Salah just before he missed a crucial penalty after the key World Cup qualifier clash against Senegal had gone to extra-time.

Ultimately, the Africa Cup of Nations runners-up were dumped out of the tournament after the shootout defeat in Senegal, with home fans celebrating wildly.

However, questions have again been asked about fan behaviour after lasers were shone at Egyptian stars throughout the game, while Salah was seemingly targeted with objects thrown by the home supporters as he was escorted down the tunnel by bodyguards at Senegal’s national stadium.

Only Salah will be able to say whether the lasers shone at him had any effect on his poorly taken penalty, which saw him blaze his shot over the posts.

“The Egyptian Football Association have lodged a formal complaint against its Senegalese counterpart to the match observer, the security official, CAF, and FIFA, before the start of the match between the two teams,” confirmed the federation at full-time.

“The Egyptian team was subjected to racism after the appearance of offensive banners in the stands aimed at the players, specifically Mohamed Salah.

“Moreover the Senegalese fans terrorised the Egyptian players by throwing bottles and stones at them during the warm-up, as well as attacking the Egyptian team bus, which caused glass shattering and some injuries, which was documented with pictures and videos attached to the complaint.”

Ironically, Salah’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane was the individual who converted the decisive shoot-out penalty to take African champions Senegal to the 2022 Soccer World Cup in Qatar at the expense of Egypt.

As was the case in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final last month, Mane was entrusted with taking the crucial fifth Senegal kick and once again he made no mistake to give his side a 3-1 shoot-out victory.
