World Cup 2022: The real reason Richard Ofori was left out of Ghana’s squad

World Cup 2022 has already claimed a number of casualties with a host of big stars ruled out with injuries.

The latest casualty is Ghanaian Richard Ofori. The Black Stars national team had no choice but to leave the Orlando Pirates keeper out of their 26-man-squad.

Knee injury ends Ofori’s World Cup 2022 dream

Ofori has fluid in his knee that was aggravated in the MTN8 final against AmaZulu last weekend. The 29-year-old stopper aggravated his knee against Usuthu, which meant that he missed the Carling Black Label Cup mid-season friendly tournament.

“Ofori’s knee got worse during the MTN8 final in Durban and that is the reason why he was ruled out of the World Cup,” a source said.

Ofori also missed the AFCON finals earlier this year in Cameroon due to the injury he suffered against Bafana Bafana in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers. As a result, the South African Premier Soccer League will not have a single representative at World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Ghana waving the flag for Africa?

Ghana, the last African nation to reach the quarter-final of a World Cup, begin their campaign against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on November 24th. They then tackle South Korea on the 28th and round out the group stage against Uruguay on December 2nd.

However, the Black Stars are woefully out of form having won just two out of 12 games in 2022.
