Ghana attacking midfielder Andre Ayew scored Africa’s first goal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup during their 3-2 loss to Portugal on Thursday.

With the scoreline 1-0 in favour of Portugal courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty goal, Ayew struck in the 73rd minute to draw Ghana level.

This marked Africa’s first goal at this global showpiece, while the second goal was scored by Osman Bukari although it proved to be a consolation as Portugal had already scored their third.

The two goals also marked Africa’s first goals at this 22nd edition of the World Cup after the other four African teams failed to score in their opening games.
