In one of the most infamous incidents in the history of the World Cup, Suárez intentionally used his hand to stop a sure goal by Dominic Adiyiah that would have sent Ghana into the semi-finals and Uruguay crashing out of the tournament.

Suárez was sent off with a red card for his indiscretion and Ghana was given a penalty kick to seal a win in dramatic style as chaos ensued. As a seemingly distraught Suárez slowly made his way to the stadium tunnel, Asamoah Gyan stepped up to take the spot kick for Ghana and missed the target.

The cameras panned to an elated Suárez, who celebrated passionately with his teammates. Ultimately, the quarter-final clash was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with Uruguay beating the West Africans 4-2 to advance to the semi-finals.

Now 12 years later, the bitter rivals are set to meet at the World Cup again in their Pool H encounter in Qatar on Friday.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Suárez showed no remorse for what he did, saying he regrets nothing.

“I won’t apologize for that,” Suárez said.

“I did the handball, but the Ghana player missed a penalty, not me. Maybe I could apologize if I injured the player, but in this situation I was sent off, the ref said penalty – it’s not my fault, because I didn’t miss the penalty. It’s not my responsibility to score the penalty.”
