Lionel Messi struck his 11th career World Cup goal to help Argentina dispatch Croatia and advance into Sunday’s World Cup final.

He also equalled another 56-year-old record.

Messi majestic at the World Cup once more

Argentina’s captain now has 11 goals at World Cups, taking him above Gabriel Batistuta as La Albiceleste’s all-time leading scorer in the tournament. This calendar year 2022, Messi has now played 50 matches for club and country, scoring 33 goals and providing 29 assists. Ridiculous output. The great man has now made 25 World Cup appearances, the same tally managed by German legend Lothar Matthaus.

If/when he takes the field in Sunday’s final, he’ll be out on his own as the man with the most World Cup appearances ever. With his goal and assist tonight, he’s also the first player to both score and assist in four separate WC matches since 1966. Let’s also not forget Julián Álvarez, who scored a wonderful solo goal tonight and then tapped home his second after amazing work from skipper Messi.
