FIFA has announced the prize money for the 32 participating nations at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Each qualified team received $1.5 million before the tournament kicked off to cover preparation costs.

Each of the 16 teams eliminated after the group stages left with $9 million in prize money.

The eight nations who lost in the Round of 16 earned $13 million each.

The four losing quarter-finalists headed home $17 million richer.

The loser of the third-place playoff – Morocco – banked $25 million while the winner of the consolation final – Croatia – earned $27 million.

The losing finalist – France – consoled themselves with $30 million while the overall winners – Argentina – claimed $42 million.

The total prize pool for the 2022 World Cup was $440 million – which was $40 million more than what was on offer at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
