Safa implicated in dodgy claims of corruption

Questions have been raised about the multi-million rand employment of a company to provide security at Safa’s head office in Johannesburg.

According to City Press, the Safa hierarchy allegedly appointed a company that is linked to one of the national executive committee (NEC) members in a deal worth millions of rands.

The report further states that the particular NEC member, and others, each got a R20 000 “loan” without the approval of congress. Further allegations suggest the chosen security firm was “practically imposed on the administration”.

In a statement provided to City Press, spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi attempted to justify this appointment and suggested it was “approved by the NEC”.

“Security was discussed at NEC level and [it was] agreed that we needed to look at another company. This is after many items disappeared from Safa House, which your newspaper reported on. The disappearance of these items happened on the watch of the previous company and we couldn’t continue with it after its contract expired,” said Chimhavi.

Safa also addressed the alleged R20 000 payout to each NEC member

“The 2018 resolution speaks about 50% to be paid and 100% if we pay the regions and declare a profit. The only thing separating us from effecting that resolution is the report back to congress. Subsequently, we paid the regions and declared a profit for two financial years. Therefore, the advance is in relation to the resolution,” explained Chimhavi.
