Television and radio personality Robert Marawa has flagged the “dismally sorry tale” of the current Bafana Bafana team after they sensationally failed to qualify for next year’s delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Bafana Bafana needed to avoid defeat against minnows Sudan to reach the finals to be held in Cameroon, but went down 2-0 in Khartoum on Sunday, 28 March.

Sudan are ranked a lowly 127th in the latest FIFA rankings (compared to South Africa’s 71st) and are 34th in Africa (SA are 13th).

However, while Bafana Bafana will be twiddling their thumbs come early 2022, Sudan will be off to the AFCON along with Ghana who topped the final standings in Group C.

Veteran sports presenter Robert Marawa highlighted on social media to his over 1 million Twitter followers the fact that Bafana Bafana have now failed to qualify for FOUR of the last seven AFCON tournaments (in 2010, 2012, 2017 and 2021).

They had qualified for seven tournaments prior to that from 1996 to 2008 and famously won the 1996 edition on home soil, their lone success to date.

Next year’s tournament was expanded to 24 teams (from 16), seemingly making it even easier to qualify.

Alas, that wasn’t the case for Molefi Ntseki’s men.
