Earlier this year, Bongani Zungu left French Ligue 2 side Amiens, and there has been talk for quite some time that he could be set for a move to a big South African side.

Zungu, who played several matches for Bafana Bafana and was thought to be a sought-after recruit for the likes of Chiefs or Sundowns, signed for Scottish club Rangers on loan from Amiens in October 2020.

Rangers also secured an option to sign him permanently for a £2.7 million transfer fee. However, his first association with Amiens began when he joined the club from Vitoria Guimarares in 2017.

The 29-year-old recently found his game time for Amiens proving to be sporadic, and in the middle of this year it was then confirmed that he is longer part of the club’s plans going forward.

“We’ve held talks with the club about a new contract, but my decision is that I will be leaving,” Zungu said back in June.

“I am a free agent now and my agent will be looking at my next move. Hopefully it will be another project that I can get excited about. We will know in the coming weeks, for now I can’t really discuss the options that are available.”

Several weeks ago Zungu also opened up on Sports Night Amplified about his current situation and plans for the future, stating that Sundowns were the only club to have reached out.

In a report that appeared on Phakaaathi on Wednesday, it’s suggested that Sundowns could be edging closer to securing the services of Zungu.

“Zungu has always made it clear that he wants to play for Sundowns again, and the club are working around the clock to bring him back to Chloorkop,” said the source.

“He has a good relationship with coach Rulani Mokwena and everyone is hoping that Mokwena can broker the deal for the club,” the source added.

According to a report that appeared on SABC Sport last month, Sundowns have gone back to the player and his camp to negotiate better personal terms, and there is reason to believe a deal could now be agreed considering there wouldn’t be a transfer fee involved.

Although Zungu has been in high demand, and may be keeping his options open, it’s reported that it could be an appealing consideration to return to a club where he excelled between 2013 and 2016 before moving to Portugal and then later France.
